As part of a larger research project on vitality indicators, the Office of the Commissioner of Official Languages initiated a study of the English-speaking community of the Eastern Townships. The objective of this study was to gain a practical understanding of vitality and vitality indicators in order to assess progress in the development of each community. The summary presentation provides an overview of the objectives, methodology and observations of the project as a whole, which also focused on two other communities: the Lower North Shore and Québec City.
This report examines various factors that paint a portrait of the Eastern Townships: history, current demographics, community resources and a selection of best practices and success stories. The purpose of this overview is to provide a background and context for the vitality model (which is defined as a logic model with objectives, indicators and data sources) that the community has created. A number of community members who are active in the target sectors were asked to map out community vitality by identifying key activities, results, indicators and data sources in each of the four sectors. These were then elaborated on, refined by the research team and validated by community members.
