Why provide second-language training to Canada's youth?
Many industrialized nations view second-language training as an essential part of a basic education. English and French are truly international languages, spoken by 800 million and 250 million people respectively around the world. Millions these people speak both languages. In the era of globalization, the ability to speak these languages increases our competitiveness and influence on the international stage.
English and French are fundamental elements of Canada's history and collective way of life. Learning a second language can break down cultural barriers and encourages openness towards others, better understanding and mutual respect.
